Looking backwards for motivation

Looking backwards for motivation

When I exercise – whatever form that might be, it’s not so much the technical aspect or the “how” of what I am doing, it’s the overall end result of what I have done that forms my motivation.

Take running for example. I do love running but not for the act of running itself. I love the feeling of freedom it gives me, I love the fitness it gives me, I love the group I run with- for the conversation, motivation & inspiration. I love the output I seek which is better health, mental alertness and emotional stability.

When I hike, it’s not the technical part of trekking, or one foot in front of the other that grabs me, it’s the immersion in scenery, the challenges of the terrain, the steps in the journey, the trail traversed that is my output.

When contemplating the gym I think about the “after”- my muscles will feel stronger, my heart will be healthier, my mind will be clearer.

So when looking for motivation , I look at how I will feel after. I seek out my tribe for the journey and exercise no longer becomes a “task”.

It becomes a portal to a better me!
