When was the last time you did something for the first time?

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

If you have kids, or know kids, we encourage them to try new things, give it a go or just get on with it. Often, as adults, we stop trying new things, become set in our routine and let doubt, possible failure or, heaven forbid, the fear of looking silly, stop us from taking on new challenges. Our world can become smaller as we live within the boundaries of what we define as “certain and sure”.

This past week, I was privy to being part of a journey with one of our members – a lady in her 60’s who is fit and active but not a strong swimmer and someone who had never kayaked before – on a kayaking adventure. Our activities are always safe and come with the support of the entire Women’s Fitness Adventures community. While all of our adventurers know this, it doesn’t stop the little voices of doubt in our heads from questioning our ability to do something. It’s there for all of us and varies depending on what is put in our path.

Standing on the foreshore, having our safety briefing, I could see the apprehension and the excitement in her face. Soon we were off and flanked by an expert instructor and a team of supportive women, our member was like a duck to water. We were up the creek, with a paddle! Nervousness had quickly turned to laughter and excitement as we focused on what was around the next bend. Relaxing into the kayak adventure we could marvel at the picturesque creek, listen to the local wildlife, the thwack of the golfers on the local course nearby and generally be at peace with nature.

Back on shore, with a cup of tea in hand, we reflect. What a moment, an achievement. As an adult, trying something new for the first time doesn’t happen by accident – you have to look for it. I couldn’t be more proud. This lady is an inspiration to me, proving you are never too old or young, too tall or small, too shy or outgoing, to take on something new. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.

Later that night I received a text from our member who was recounting the story to her husband and grown son. They were in awe and admiration. As you should be too.

Next time you think you can’t do something – you know you can. Find the supportive community that will take you over the line and watch your world expand.
